Pirate Radio

Brinkley applid for and recieved a license for radio broadcast for his newly established KFKB (known as Kansas First Kansas Best) in Milford. He was soon using this radio station to promote his medical activities and entertain his listening audience in several states as well as the hospital. It was his practice at the time to prescribe medicine over the air in response to letters from patients and listeners. He would create prescription numbers, based on symptoms, for his "over the air" patients, and then recieve kickbacks from the pharmacies (state-wide association of druggists organized by Brinkley) that these patients visited to fill them.

When Brinkley tried to get the station's power boosted to 5000 watts, he met with some opposition from a rival radio station, owned by the Kansas Star, which started to run exposees on the good doctor. But it was the Supreme Court of Kansas that brought him down, stating,"The licensee has performed an organized charlatanism...quite beyond theinvention of the humble mountebank."

Later, after a filed attempt at aquiring the Sansa State Governorship, he sold KFKB for $90,000 and relocated to the southern border town of Del Rio, Texas. Then, right over the border, in Villa Acuna, Mexico, Brinkley built a transmitter with 300 foot towers. Here, he pumped a whopping 75,000 watts. This afforded him an audience range clear to Chicago. When he returned to Texas after his run for the Governorship of Kansas, his Mexican lobbyiwsts succeeded in allowing to boost his power to 500,000 watts. This made his station XER (his new station) the most powerful radio station in the world.
